A resident of the Indian city of Jodhpur, Shantadevi Meghwal (Santadevi Meghwal), who was married at age one, could invalidate the marriage at the age of 19, reported The Daily Mail.

After numerous petitions by the girl, the union, which was made in 1997 between 11-month old Meghwal and 9-year-old Sanwal Ram, was annulled by a family court.

The judicial process lasted two years.

The girl had learned about her marriage in 2013, when her father was told that she had to move to her husband’s house to live in.

The girl wanted to break off the marriage, albeit her parents were against it. 

Consequently, Meghwal was fined Indian rupees equivalent to approximately €23 thousand.

In addition, she was barred from the community for not respecting ancient traditions.
