7 weeks later after arrest of the Die Welt correspondent Deniz Yucel in Turkey, Germany will be able to visit him at a consular level. Turkey confirmed through a verbal note, that German diplomats will meet Yucel on April 4. This was announced by the representative of the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin, reports Deutsche Welle.
The report says that German Foreign Minister Zigmar Gabriel being present at the meeting of NATO foreign ministers on Friday, March 31, requested his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu to provide him a visit with Deniz Yucel at a consular level. Gabriel insisted, that the Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim fulfilled his promise on the relevant issue.
The German Foreign Ministry spokesman said, that later Cavusoglu, apparently, raised that issue in Ankara, for what Gabriel is grateful to him.
"Today through a verbal note Turkey confirmed, that we will finally have a possibility to meet Deniz Yucel, to ensure his well-being in prison after those difficult days," said the German Foreign Ministry representative. He assessed Turkey’s act as "a step forward".
