YEREVAN. – The Facebook page of the “For the Development of Science [in Armenia]” initiative has informed that initiative member Yuri Avagyan has ended his hunger strike, on Wednesday night.

“Avagyan was taken to the hospital because of pneumonia,” the respective post also reads.

Yuri Avagyan on Wednesday was examined at a medical center, and he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

The aforesaid initiative members on Tuesday resumed—at a Yerevan State University lecture hall—their hunger strike, which they had stopped about a month ago.

They demand that the right to academic military deferment be maintained in Armenia.

Now, solely Davit Petrosyan, another member of the said initiative, continues his hunger strike.

On November 15, the National Assembly of Armenia passed the bill on making amendments to the Law on Military Service and the Status of Military Servicemen. But this bill considerably limits the right to military deferment in the country.
