Germany's chemical industry has already done everything possible to save gas, the chemical association VCI said, warning that the only remaining steps for the industry would be to cut or completely stop production, Reuters reported.

"For our companies, we are currently once again doing everything we can to exploit every last potential gas saving," said VCI's chief executive, Wolfgang Grosse Entrup.

According to the VCI, which represents around 1,900 companies, the German chemicals and pharmaceuticals industry is the largest consumer of gas in the country, accounting for 15 percent of total consumption.

Industry leader BASF is the largest consumer of industrial gas in Germany.

The VCI issued a warning and called for a "public demonstration of the will to save gas" in order to survive the winter.
