Abkhaz President Aslan Bzhania promised to resign when protesters leave the parliament building in Sukhum, RIA Novosti reports.

“When they leave the building, I will write a resignation letter, and at the new elections we will see how much support they will get,” he said at a meeting with the people in the village of Tamysh.

The Abkhazian leader demanded from the protesters to vacate the complex of government buildings and then he would be ready to call new elections. In case of his resignation, the vice-president will govern the country, Bzhania added.

At the same time, he expressed readiness to put his candidacy on the ballot.

Yesterday morning people began to gather outside the parliament at the call of the opposition. The supreme legislative body was to consider the ratification of the intergovernmental agreement with Russia on investments. But the session was canceled by the deputies' decision.

The opposition demanded Bzhania's resignation and snap presidential elections. He refused yesterday, saying he would continue his work.
