Pope Francis, 88, has been battling a number of health problems, including bilateral pneumonia. This has led to speculation that the pontiff may step down, similar to his predecessor, Pope Benedict, reports The Times.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper ABC, Francis said that he had signed a document to resign in the event of a serious deterioration in his health. He noted that in the event of medical obstacles or other circumstances, he is ready to step down.

Vatican Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi suggested that Pope Francis might consider resigning if his ability to communicate and make decisions is impaired.

Francis’ biographer Austen Ivereigh said the pontiff is willing to continue his ministry despite his physical weakness, but is also aware of the need to fully fulfill his duties. And if he feels he cannot do so anymore, a move towards resignation is possible.

Pope Francis is currently in stable health and continues to carry out his duties from a hospital bed.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the pope at Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Wednesday. She said Francis remains cheerful and has a sense of humor.
