Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has strongly criticized President Donald Trump's decision to impose duties on the country's imports, the Daily Mail reported.
He was quoted by The Wall Street Journal criticizing Trump and calling his decision “stupid.”
“Donald, they're pointing out that even though you're a very smart guy, this is a very stupid thing to do”, he said angrily at a press conference on Tuesday.
Imports from Canada will now be subject to a 25% tax, due to the duties imposed by Trump taking effect Tuesday.
“Today, the United States launched a trade war against Canada, its closest partner, ally and friend”, Trudeau said. - At the same time they talk about positive cooperation with Russia, about appeasing Vladimir Putin, the lying murderous dictator. Let that make sense.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the United States will import $412 billion worth of goods from Canada in 2024, as it is the United States' third-largest trading partner.
Justin Trudeau addressed the American people directly, blaming the country's President Donald Trump for the decision on the duties and warning that it would hurt the country economically.
“We don't want that. We want to work with you as a friend and an ally and we also don't want to see you hurt, but your government has chosen to do this to you,” he said.
Trudeau announced that Canada will begin imposing 25 percent duties on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, starting with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods immediately.
