Armenian peacekeepers will be sent to Afghanistan in February, 2010, said the Colonel Artur Simonyan, the commander of peacekeeping brigade at the RA Defense Ministry.
According to him, group of peacekeepers will arrive in Afghanistan to survey the terms of further service. Simonyan stated that in January, 40-militant detachment will leave for Germany to undergo a 2- or 3-week training. “Later, along with German contingent they will leave for Afghanistan,” underlined Simonyan. The Armenian mission will be rotary, however precise terms of its deployment in Afghanistan is yet unclear.
Meanwhile, he pointed out that there is no decision of RA Parliament on sending the peacekeepers, adding that activities of Armenian servicemen, involved in various missions are highly assessed by leadership of western countries.
