YEREVAN. – The goal of the United States is to help the Armenian government in finding tools to fight corruption, U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills said in an interview with the RFE/RL Armenian service.

“Our goals are very simple. We want to see Armenia free, prosperous and in peace with its neighbors,” Ambassador said, adding that corruption undermines democracy and even the national security of the country.

The diplomat expressed willingness to partner with the Armenian people to fight corruption, highlighting the role of the civil society that can help in this mission.

“The question is whether the government has tools and a political will to fight corruption,” he emphasized.

Speaking about anti-corruption council, Ambassador said they view the council as a tool as commitment of the government to address the issue.

“I am willing to work with any institution of the government that is committed to fight corruption,” the diplomat assured.

Asked about the Embassy's actions if the council fails its mission, Mr. Mills said they expect to see actions, as words are not enough.

“If over time we do not see a kind of commitment that the prime minister and the council itself says they want to take, we will re-evaluate our relationships with the council,” he said, adding that t it will affect “a large part of our relations, for instance investments.”
