One can notice that the Armenian authorities are striving to take substantive actions. This is what Director of the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs NGO Stepan Safaryan during a conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the EU Eastern Partnership on 4 April.

According to him, after the ‘velvet revolution’, one can notice that the authorities are making the transition from pretending to take reforms (typical of the former authorities) to making substantive reforms. “In addition, the authorities have no problem with legitimacy, and this allows them to lead a more effective foreign policy,” the analyst stated.

According to Safaryan, some fears that political persecutions could have begun amid the fight against corruption were not justified. “Today, there are criminal cases that are very politically resonant, but there are no cases that would have a political context. This also concerns the case of the events of 1 March 2008,” the former pro-Western Deputy of Heritage Party says.
