A court in India has sentenced to death 38 people for a series of bombings in 2008 that killed more than 50 people and injured 200 others in the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state, AP reported.

This is the first time that so many accused have been sentenced to death in one case in India. The sentence is to be confirmed by a higher court,

Justice A. R. Patel also sentenced 11 people in the case to life imprisonment.

An Islamist group called Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami claimed responsibility for the blasts. It was thought to be based in Pakistan but is apparently no longer active.
