The U.S. State Department announced its intention to add up to 100 modern missiles to Patriot air defense systems along with radar and auxiliary equipment worth $882 million to the military aid package for Taiwan, Bloomberg reported, citing a State Department document.

The new proposal would provide up to 100 Patriot Pac-3 Missile Segment Enhancement missiles from Lockheed Martin Corp. that are more advanced than previous Patriot missiles sent to Taiwan, the report said.

The proposal is prepared under the terms of the 2010 U.S.-Taiwan deal and is not technically new, but is classified as an extension of it, the agency said. The potential total value of the deal is $2.81 billion.

Earlier, U.S. Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman said that the United States administration admits the "potential possibility" of military action by Beijing against Taiwan and is making efforts to prevent it.
