Kazakh Foreign Minister, OSCE Chairman-in-Office Kanat Saudabayev’s statement on the necessity of Turkey’s involvement in the Karabakh peace process runs counter to the OSCE Permanent Council’s decision on the chairing country’s neutrality to the Karabakh conflict, Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Secretary Eduard Sharmazanov told NEWS.am.

According to him, such statements cast a shade both on Kazakhstan and on the OSCE. “Any attempt to involve Ankara in the Karabakh peace process is doomed to failure, and the three OSCE Co-Chair countries - Russia, U.S. and France – are the only ones authorized to deal with the problem.  Any other format is unacceptable for the Armenian side,” Sharmazanov said. Azerbaijan itself stated Ankara’s involvement in the peace process is impossible, as the Armenian side’s consent is needed. “If Saudabayev wants to help Turkey, let him tell it how to resolve the Kurdish issue and problems with democracy,” Sharmazanov said.

Kazakhstan stresses Turkey’s crucial role in the Karabkh peace process, Kazakh Foreign Minister, OSCE Chairman-in-Office Kanat Saudabayev stated at a June 21 press conference, following the meeting with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu.

Saudabayev said they could not slip over the Karabakh conflict. As an OSCE Chairman-in-Office Kazakhstan steps up efforts to reduce tension in protracted conflicts, and Turkey’s involvement in their resolution is very important. In his turn, the Turkish FM noted the efforts needed to reduce tension in the Karabakh conflict were the focus at the meeting.

Kazakhstan initially offered its mediation in Karabakh peace process during Saudabayev’s visit to Armenia. However, Yerevan considered Kazakhstan’s mediation undesirable.
