YEREVAN. – The only way for Armenia to confront the existing challenges is to have independent energy policy, economist Ashot Yeghiazaryan said during the debates on electricity price.

Armenia is faced with tough challenges in energy sector with the most difficult one being to ensure sufficient energy supply.

“The second challenge is to free our energy sector from the dependence on Russia. The thirds is modernization of the energy sector and the fourth is providing population with affordable energy,” Yeghiazaryan said.

He noted that under the Eurasian Economic Union, Armenia will find itself in an energy blockade.

“By joining the Union, Armenia deprived itself of energy alternative,” he said.

The current electricity rate is 41.85 drams per 1 kWh during the day and 31.85 at night. However, it is proposed to increase the rate to 58 and 48 drams respectively.
