YEREVAN. – The parties’ statements on commencing political discussions are a pre-election move—in the run-up to February’s presidential elections, Democratic Party of Armenia Chairman Aram Sargsyan stated during a press conference on Friday.

In his words, passing to a one-hundred-percent proportional electoral system and the parliamentary model for governance are not new ideas. “Why did they decide to again talk about this today? It is a pre-election move. It is a way to consolidate the political forces around them,” Sargsyan said.       

The press conference’s other speaker, ruling Republican Party MP Mkrtich Minasyan, likewise noted that the aforesaid ideas are nothing new. He believes the Parliament must fulfill its role, and the President, his. Minasyan noted that it is the pre-election season, and therefore each political party is developing its own campaign strategy.
