YEREVAN. – Armenia stands ready to contribute to the process of opening the Abkhazian railway. 

Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharyan noted the aforesaid during Thursday’s National Assembly session devoted to the discussion of the 2012 Budget performance.

An opposition MP had asked Kocharyan as to why Russia is not making any statements about the operation of the Abkhazian railway. In response, the Armenian deputy FM said Russia is definitely interested in the reopening of the railway and the reasons are apparent.      

He recalled that the Upper Lars border checkpoint reopened after the Georgian-Russian war in 2008, and, moreover, the talks between the two parties were conducted in Armenian capital city Yerevan.    

“And Upper Lars reopened thereafter. We stand ready to assist so that the Abkhazian railway is reopened, too. It is not a matter that can be resolved quickly yet, on the other hand, it is not irresolvable [either],” Shavarsh Kocharyan stated.
