Russian FM Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary Hillary Clinton signed a protocol on amendments to Russian-American agreement on arms-grade plutonium destruction in Washington.

The document provides for the utilization of minimum 34 tones of plutonium by each party, Interfax reports. Interestingly, U.S. is ready to allocate $400m for the Russian part of the program.

“The document makes disarmament irreversible, as provides for the U.S. and Russia to openly destroy arms-grade plutonium. Thereby, its use for any military purpose will be impossible,” U.S. State Department statement reads.

According to Clinton, the plutonium intended for utilization would be sufficient for production of 17 nuclear warheads in each country, adding that both U.S. and Russia plan to utilize “more plutonium” further.
