Opposition Heritage Party National Assembly (NA) Faction Secretary Tevan Poghosyan is convinced that Armenia can and should continue to be guided by the European Union (EU) Association Agreement, even after accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
“If there was a referendum today, the people would choose the Eurasian Economic Union with the 50+1 principle.
“[But] one thing is clear: We [, Armenia,] were going toward the EU Association Agreement for 3.5 years, but now everyone announces that we had gone toward the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union from the very beginning,” the opposition MP said at a press conference on Tuesday.
In Poghosyan’s words, the EEU will not enable Armenia to develop, whereas the country should have been guided by its long-term interests.
“The presented opportunities are solely on paper. I, personally, I don’t believe in the establishment of this union. Armenia needs to continue to move with the Association Agreement,” Heritage’s MP stated.
On December 4, the National Assembly ratified the treaty on Armenia’s accession to the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union. The document was ratified by a vote of 103 for, 7 against (including 5 Heritage Faction MPs), and one abstention.
