Azerbaijani media, as usual, is engaged in distortion of the remarks by high ranking officials and representatives of the international agencies.

This time Azerbaijani APA agency presented an incorrect quote by James Appathurai, NATO Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The NATO representative was quick to respond to distortion of his words in his message on Facebook.

“Need to correct a report in the APA news agency, posted today, based on the briefing I gave earlier this week at NATO Headquarters. The last paragraph of this report is incorrect. The “quote” which it contains does not correspond to what I said,” Appathurai said in a message.

The last paragraph in APA report is as follows: “NATO has officially announced its position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict at the Wales summit. We support a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and in accordance with the parties’ interests.”

James Appathurai said the information about the Alliance’s position on the protracted conflicts agreed by Heads of State and Government during the Wales Summit, can be found in the NATO Wales Summit Declaration, paragraph 30 and 31.

The final declaration adopted in Wales said the NATO “Allies also remain committed in their support to the territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Republic of Moldova”. The document also said NATO will continue to support efforts towards a peaceful settlement of the conflicts in the South Caucasus, as well as in the Republic of Moldova.
