Southern Spain could become desert, say researchers from the Aix-Marseille University in France.

These scientists have done research on global warming, and come to the conclusion that such a rapid rise in temperature on Earth can lead to a part of the Mediterranean region turning into desert, according to informing.ru.

According to experts, if the temperature rises by 2 degrees Celsius (˚C), southern Portugal and Spain as well as some parts of Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, some areas of Syria, and southern Turkey could face the threat of drought.

Ever since the 19th century, the air temperature in this region has risen by 1.3˚C, which is 0.85 ˚C above the average temperature in the planet.

Scientists remind that if the governments of these countries do not reduce their atmospheric emissions, the Mediterranean ecosystems will deteriorate.
