More than 1,700 public primary schools in India’s capital Delhi are closed because of smog, Indian media reported.

The decision affected 1,747 schools, with an enrollment of nearly 900,000 children. In general, schools independently make the decision whether to continue work despite the bad weather conditions, or not within a week.

Schools will be re-opened on Monday, but at the same time they can make other own decision. Some schools canceled classes and sport activities, as well as prohibited holding of any outdoor activities.

Air quality in the last few days in Delhi is estimated to be “potentially dangerous” that is mainly conditioned by the consequences of explosions of petards, fireworks and firecrackers in the Hindu festival of Diwali on 29-30 October.
