YEREVAN. - According to official statistics, 60 percent of the Armenian population doesn’t get enough food.

Opposition MP Stepan Demirchyan, who is the Chairman of the People’s Party, said the aforementioned in the National Assembly (NA) on Tuesday, speaking at the debate on the bill on paying 1000 AMD to servicemen’s insurance fund.

He noted that pursuant to the statistics, the level of poverty hasn’t dropped for eight years and now it amounts to almost 30 percent.  900,000 people are officially considered poor, but their number is actually twice more, since according to the same National Statistical Service, 60 percent of the country’s population doesn’t get enough food.  “The consumption of goods of prime necessity, as well as that of electricity and gas is reducing. The country’s state debt has exceeded 50 percent of the GDP, coming closer to $6 billion. The country needs rule of law, that is, specific steps are needed to return what has been looted,” Demirchyan stressed.
