One of the four imperial cities in Morocco, Marrakesh became the first African city to receive the official status of the cultural capital of the continent, Lonely Planet reported.

Marrakesh is increasingly in demand among travelers, as the local government is doing its best to improve the infrastructure throughout the country, including the modernization of a number of old neighborhoods. The number of foreign tourists increased from 2017 to 2018 by about 15%.

Marrakesh is already home to two Unesco-listed World Heritage sites: the famous square of Djemaa El Fna and its labyrinthine medina, the walled old city.
