The meeting of Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian leaders is aimed at easing tension in the region, said Armenian MP.

Head of Heritage parliamentary group Stepan Safaryan considers that one should not have great expectations from the viewpoint of a breakthrough in the peace process.

“The Saint Petersburg meeting of the presidents was followed by an act of sabotage by the Azerbaijani side and killing of Armenian soldiers. After that meeting it became clear the presidents are discussing not the Karabakh conflict itself but the current situation,” Safaryan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian presidents met in Sochi last Saturday to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. The presidents adopted a joint declaration and agreed to investigate incidents in the line of contact “with the participation of the parties under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and with the assistance of the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office.”

Commenting on a declaration, Safaryan stressed the Co-Chairs can in fact assist the parties in carrying out an investigation, but it is not clear how exactly the investigation would be conducted.
