US President Donald Trump phoned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday and congratulated him on his re-election for a fifth term, Reuters reported.

In turn, the Israeli Prime Minister thanked his ally for “tremendous support for Israel”.
Netanyahu tweeted that Trump had called him from Air Force One. The president was on a flight to Texas.

“Trump warmly congratulated (me) and the Israeli people,” Netanyahu tweeted. “(I) thanked President Trump for his tremendous support for Israel, including recognition of Jerusalem and the Golan,” he said.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main rival Benny Gantz announced their victory in the parliamentary elections in Israel.

In March, Trump declared the need to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

The Golan Heights is a disputable territory in the Middle East the biggest part of which is controlled by Israel, while the eastern part by Syria. Just as Israel, Syria considers the Golan Heights a part of its territory. From 1944 to 1967 the Golan Heights were a part of the Syrian province of Quneitra. Two thirds of the territory was seized by Israel during the Six-Day war in June 1976.
