The ruling New Democracy party of Greece loses as the socialist Panhellenic Socialist Movement (or Pasok) wins the snap elections by almost 44 percent of votes. It is expected that Pasok will take 160 out of 300 seats in the Greek unicameral parliament. The New Democracy party with 33.8 percent of votes and 92 mandates slips into the opposition. The Communist party got 7.4 percent of votes and 20 mandates respectively.

The outgoing Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said: “I assume responsibility for the result and will launch procedures for the election of a new party leader,” BBC informs.

George Papandreou, 57, after two failed attempts takes the PM’s seat just like his father and grandfather. On October 4, in Athens he stated that will start “A good fight to bring back hope and smile on Greeks' faces… to change the country's course into one of law, justice, solidarity, green development and progress. I know very well the great potential of this country. Potential that is being drowned by corruption, favouritism, lawlessness and waste. Potential that we will set free,” BBC reads.
