German citizen Jens F. was charged with espionage for passing information on property exploited by the German parliament to Russian military intelligence, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the prosecutor's office.

The suspect worked for a company that has repeatedly received contracts to inspect portable electrical appliances from the Bundestag or the lower house of parliament, federal prosecutors said in a statement.

He accessed PDFs of the floor plans of the respective properties. The Bundestag is located in the Reichstag building - a Berlin landmark but also uses several other facilities.

Prosecutors said that at some point before the beginning of September 2017, the suspect of his own free will decided to transfer information about these objects to Russian intelligence. According to them, he sent PDFs to an employee of the Russian embassy in Berlin, who was a Russian military intelligence officer in the GRU.

The charges were filed in a Berlin court on February 12. The court will have to decide whether to continue the process.
