Prime Minister of Estonia Kaya Kallas has announced the government’s decision on declaring a lockdown on March 11 due to the spread of the British strain of the coronavirus, Interfax reports.

The government has assessed the coronavirus situation as critical. According to the Prime Minister, the British strain is currently recorded in 98% of the analyzed tests, and for this reason, doctors have advised the authorities to declare a lockdown for at least a month.

Starting from March 11, all schools and universities will hold remote classes, all stores that don’t sell first necessity items will be closed, cafes and restaurants won’t be operating, and citizens’ movement will be restricted on the streets.

Based on the latest statistics, since the outbreak of the pandemic, Estonia has reported over 76,000 coronavirus cases, and more than 650 people have died from the virus. The country reported nearly 9,400 new coronavirus cases between March 1 and 7 alone.
