The new mayor of one of the biggest cities in the US state of Florida will undergo a virtual inauguration ceremony, ABC News reported, citing official sources.

Ken Welch, 54, was due to take the oath on the steps of St. Petersberg Town Hall, but the ceremony was canceled to follow quarantine guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the report said.

Welch was vaccinated at the beginning of 2020 and revaccinated in November, officials said. Welch's first home test for COVID-19 was tested positive yesterday morning. Later, he also received a positive PCR test.

Welch said he will work from home until the isolation period expires. He expects to start work at City Hall next Monday.

Welch is replacing Mayor Rick Kriseman, who is leaving office because of term limits.
