Washington will assist Georgia to join NATO, said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense Alexander Vershbow in Tbilisi Oct. 20 at the sitting of Georgia-U.S. security working group, Interfax informs.

“We intend to work out a special plan to fortify Georgia’s efforts to membership in NATO,” stated Vershbow.

Today, October 20, 2009 the U.S. official discussed the Georgia’s security issues with Eka Tkeshelashvili, Secretary of the Georgian National Security Council. Following the meeting, Tkeshelashvili pointed out that “wide range of security issues was canvassed.” According to her, at the moment the U.S. involvement in security provision of Georgia is an accomplished fact.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Alexander Nalbandov said that anti-missile defense system in Georgia was not considered. According to him, there was no concrete decision or agreements yet on ABM program in Georgia.

The source informs the sides agreed to consider possibility of international peacekeeping contingent deployment on Georgia-Abkhazia and Georgia-S. Ossetia conflict zones international peacekeeping forces — within the framework of Geneva security discussions.

The parties also agreed upon the U.S. training and equipment assistance to Georgian servicemen for the mission performance in Afghanistan.
