YEREVAN.- France attaches major importance to relations with Armenia, said French leader Nicolas Sarkozy at a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan.

According to him, Armenia can count on friendship and cooperation of France. He pointed out strategic importance of the Caucasus region, noting that Armenia is at the crossroads of civilizations and major powers - Russia, Turkey and Iran. He stressed importance of Armenia’s achievements over 20 years especially in the context of instability in the region.

Sarkozy added that developments in Armenia are attentively followed in France, taking into account a large Armenian community, which plays an important role in the country.

He recalled that France extended a helping hand to the Armenian people after the Genocide and now Armenia is not alone.

According to Sarkozy, he asked his Armenian counterpart to continue the path of peace with Azerbaijan, as it is in the interests of both states.

He also called for continuation of talks with Turkey. It is unacceptable to have closed borders nowadays, he said adding that France will facilitate Armenia’s efforts.
