Catholic bishops in Ireland strongly oppose the program to build new nuclear plants in England and Ireland.

As NEWS.am reported previously, British Government gave a green light for construction of 10 nuclear power plants among which is the Sellafield NPP in west England that will be redeveloped. It is long since a public request has been sent to the British administration to close the plant as it exposes the near-by localities and has drastic negative effect on health and environment.

According to the Archbishop of Cashel Most Rev Dermot Clifford, “95 percent of the bishops are against nuclear reactors” and “rather than nuclear power the emphasis should be on developing alternative energies such as wind, wave and solar power,” Irish Times e-source reads Nov. 11.
