The Trump administration has decided to pay nearly $5 million to the family of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed during Trump supporters storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021, reports The Washington Post.

Ashli Babbitt, a 35-year-old former soldier, was among the Trump supporters who broke a window and tried to break into the House Speaker's office, reports BBC. She was shot and killed by Capitol Police officer Michael Byrd. He was later fully acquitted.

Trump has claimed, without evidence, that the results of the 2020 US presidential election, which he lost, were rigged, and that his supporters were trying to obstruct the procedure for confirming Joe Biden as president in Congress.

Ashli Babbitt's relatives had filed a $30 million lawsuit against the US federal authorities. The Justice Department was going to sue them, but after Trump's re-election, it decided to reach a settlement with the plaintiffs before trial. Trump, in turn, pardoned all participants in the Capitol attack on his first day in office.

Outgoing Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger told CBS that he was extremely upset by this decision of the Trump administration.
