German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been awarded Finnish gender equality prize in recognition of her work as a defender of human rights and commitment to women and girls around the world, the official website of the Finnish government reported. Prime Minister of Finland Juha Sipila presented the award to the Chancellor in Brussels.

“Chancellor Angela Merkel has become one of the world’s most influential people and is an example to many women and girls”, says Prime Minister Juha Sipilia.

Merkel said she was honored to receive the award, and will continue to work "for promoting gender equality.”

The prize amounts to €150,000. Merkel said that she would spend money on the development of programs on gender equality.
