YEREVAN. – According to preliminary results of Sunday’s snap National Assembly (NA) election in Armenia, the new parliament will have 132 MPs, whereas there are 105 lawmakers in the current legislature.

The reason is that My Step Alliance has garnered more than 70 percent of the votes, whereas the country’s election law stipulates that the opposition in the NA cannot have less than one-third of the parliamentary seats. So, the other two political forces that have made it to the parliament—namely, the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) and the Bright Armenia Party (BAP)—will receive additional seats until they have a one-third presence in the new NA.

Calculations indicate that My Step Alliance will get 84 seats. Also, the four parliamentary seats being allocated to national minorities will be added to the seats of this political force.

According to initial calculations, the PAP and the BAP were to have 10 and 7 seats, respectively, but they will get additional parliamentary seats.

Thus, the seat distribution in the new NA will be as follows:  My Step Alliance: 88 seats, PAP: 26 seats, and BAP: 18 seats.

As reported earlier, the Central Electoral Commission has counted all the ballots that were cast in Sunday’s snap parliamentary election in Armenia.

Accordingly, the My Step Alliance, led by Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, has won the election, with 70.43% (884,456 votes).

The Prosperous Armenia Party, whose chairman—and tycoon—Gagik Tsarukyan has repeatedly expressed his support to Pashinyan and his “velvet revolution,” has come second, with 8.27 percent (103,824).

And another Pashinyan supporter, Bright Armenia Party, led by Chairman Edmon Marukyan, has placed third, with 6.37% (80,024).

The other political forces running for parliament, however, have not passed the minimum thresholds—5% for parties, and 7% for alliances—to win seats in the new NA, which is elected for five years.
