The EU Council has approved a global sanctions regime for violations of human rights. It is expected to take effect from December 10, a European diplomatic source told TASS on Monday.

The regime provides for the creation of a global blacklist of persons who are prohibited from entering the EU territory and access to the EU financial system. All their assets in European banks are subject to freezing, EU residents are not allowed to provide these persons with any financial services.

The sanctions regime was approved by the FMs without discussion, since it was already agreed on December 2 at the level of ambassadors of all 27 states of the community.

Anyone who falls under the sanctions can try to challenge their inclusion on the blacklist in the European Court of justice in Luxembourg.
