Britain needs air defense in connection with the war in Ukraine because it is almost "totally exposed" to attacks by Russian long-range missiles, former commander of the British Military Academy, Edward Stringer said.

According to him, the military is limited to what it can do without a long-range air defense system, and the only way to protect London from a hypersonic or ballistic attack is to deploy a type 45 destroyer in the Thames equipped with Sea Viper missiles.

Stringer warned that the war in Ukraine reminded the West that “nuclear weapons did not go away at the end of the Cold War and that nuclear powers do not possess these weapons simply as a deterrent.” “They are willing to consider using them in acts of aggression and coercion,” he said in a paper for the Police Exchange think tank. “This requires that we reconsider our approach to nuclear weapons, and we need to reconsider our response accordingly.”

Stringer said that if, Russia comes out of the war with Ukraine weakened, "then we must recalculate our share of NATO support to deter further Russian aggression."

“This should lead to costly war plans and adequate stockpiles of weapons,” he said.
