The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expresses its strong protest in connection with the inhuman treatment of the citizen of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili, who is behind bars in Georgia.

"In the worst traditions of the PCIA of the USSR, the Georgian authorities use psychological and physical violence against Mikheil Saakashvili, deny him urgently needed medical care, deliberately creating a direct threat to his life. Gross violation of human rights towards Ukrainian citizen runs counter to Tbilisi's declared course towards EU membership and shows that democracy in Georgia is collapsing," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Thus, Ukraine calls on the Georgian authorities to immediately stop mocking Saakashvili and hand him over to Ukraine.

"Do not play with the life of a man for the sake of political revenge. We also appeal to foreign governments and international organizations to become publicly in defense of a Ukrainian citizen, the former president of Georgia, whose life was threatened by political repression by the Georgian authorities," the ministry said.
