European Parliament adopted resolution condemning the recent attacks against religious and ethnic communities and the suffering of women and children in Syria.

The document contains reports about attacks on Armenian-populated Kessab. The resolution mentions that “the fights between regime forces and rebel fighters, including elements linked to Al-Qaeda, at the end of March 2014 led to the evacuation of the vast majority of the population of Kassab, an Armenian town on the Syrian-Turkish border.”

European Parliament strongly condemned the recent attacks against certain religious and ethnic communities in Syria, notably the Christians, Armenians and Kurds, and called on all the parties involved to stop all actions aimed at inciting interethnic and interconfessional conflict.

The MEPs also condemned “the attack against the Armenian town of Kassab; support all efforts at local level to avoid and combat sectarian violence in rebel-held areas and in Kurdish-majority areas”.

All vulnerable communities in Syria should be protected, say MEPs, by allowing humanitarian access and lifting all sieges of populated areas, including the Old City of Holms. They call for the establishment of safe havens and for the creation of humanitarian corridors.
