January 17, 2010 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will visit Haiti, which was hit by a devastating earthquake, Reuters reports. As UN Secretary-General stated earlier, he will show solidarity with the Haitian people.
January 15, 2010 in UN headquarters in New York, UN made a decision on allocation of U.S. $ 562m to the restoration of the country.
Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes named Haiti quake “a terrible disaster”, Vesti informs. According to Haitian official, 40.000 people were buried.
Previously, UN allotted U.S. $10m for disaster relief and recovery to Haiti.
According to Haitian Interior Ministry, death toll in Jan. 12 devastating quake may reach 200.000 people.
January 12, 2010 a major earthquake rocked Haiti collapsing thousands of buildings, including the presidential palace and the U.N. peacekeeping headquarters, prison and lots of scools in capital city Port-au-Prince.
Under preliminary data, 3m people were left without roof.
