Susannah Mushatt Jones, the world's oldest person listed in the Guinness World Records has died at the age of 116 in New York, abcNEWS reported. 

A senior consultant for the Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group Robert Young stated that, said Jones died Thursday night at a public housing facility for seniors in Brooklyn. She had been ill for the past 10 days, the news agency reported.

The relatives of Jones, who had 10 brothers and sisters, mentioned that she lived a long life due to her love of family and generosity to others.

Jones was African-American, who was born in 1899 on a farm in Alabama. She became Guinness World Records' official oldest person when 117-year-old Misao Okawa died in Tokyo in 2015.

Now the record for longevity belongs to 116-year-old Emma Morano from Italy, which is only a few months younger than Jones.
