Maine residents have voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use in their state. Voting on this issue took place on November 8, when elections of the president, senators and congressmen were held, Fox News reported.

The final results of the referendum were tabulated on Thursday. The count took nearly two days because of how close the race was, within a fraction of a percentage point.

Supporters of marijuana legalization have won only with insignificant overweight. Medical marijuana was already legal in Maine.

People 21 or older will now be allowed to use up to 70 g of marijuana, while retail marijuana shops and social clubs could open around the state. Marijuana won't become available at the retail level until after a state rulemaking process that could be slow and arduous.

Supporters of legalization hope marijuana will be available in retail establishments by 2018. On November 8 legalization of marijuana was approved also by California, Nevada and Massachusetts. Arizona voted against.
