The new European Union (EU) standards have gone against some Swedish national Christmas traditions.

Swedes traditionally prepare glögg (mulled wine) for centuries during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Glögg is a red or white wine-based drink, in which cinnamon and cloves are added.  Whiskey and rum also make up the ingredient of this flavored drink.

The new EU standards, however, prohibit the use of whiskey and rum in this beverage, and therefore glögg will now have to be prepared solely with grape raw material.

As a result, this drink, which is prepared with traditional recipe, can no longer have the word “glögg” on its label.
