YEREVAN. – Recent statements by the senior European Union (EU) officials suggest that the EU is deeply disappointed with the current Turkish authorities.

Director of the Institute of Orientology at the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, historian and turkologist Ruben Safrastyan, told the aforementioned to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

In his words, it is apparent that the current leadership of Turkey seeks to establish a totalitarian rule in the country.

“Human rights abuses, curtailing of free speech, not respecting the rights of national minorities, and massive political pressure, which we see today in Turkey, do not correspond to European values,” said the turkologist.

In his view, however, the European officials’ statements regarding Turkey are even mild, to some extent.

“The European Union will take more decisive actions against Turkey,” assured Safrastyan.
