A large explosion struck a coal mine in northern Iran, killing at least 26 miners and trapping several others as rescue teams worked frantically through the day and into the night to reach them, Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran reported.

The explosion occurred in the Zemestanyurt coal mine in the northeastern province of Golestan on Wednesday.
