The city of Minneapolis on Friday agreed to pay $ 27 million to settle a civil lawsuit with the family of African American George Floyd just weeks ahead of the trial of a former police officer accused of murder in his death, NBC News reported.

The city council unanimously approved the agreement on Friday after a closed meeting.  It includes a $ 500,000 donation to a community located at 38th and Chicago Avenues, now known as George Floyd Square, where police confronted Floyd on May 25 last year after a convenience store clerk said that  he tried to use a counterfeit $ 20 bill to buy cigarettes.
