Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the death toll in the Syrian government’s crackdown reached 2,000.

About one hundred people have been recently killed in the city of Hama, one of footholds of President Bashar al-Assad’s opponents, BBC reported. Local residents say snipers and tanks are firing at civilians.

The main demand of protestors, who have taken to the streets since March, is a multi-party system. The ruling regime explains clashes by actions of “armed criminal groups” supported by foreign forces.

Clinton reiterated her position that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has “lost legitimacy” as a leader. According to her, U.S. and allies will work to strengthen pressure on Syria.
