Experts are still debating the main cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs around 66 million years ago, reports Planet Today. Scottish experts argue that it was a meteor, but this space object was not alone.
The first meteor was 14 km in diameter and fell on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, which is the territory of modern-day Mexico. As a result, the Chicxulub crater was formed, the diameter of which exceeded 100 km.
According to experts, the second meteor collided with the Earth off the coast of West Africa. The Nadir crater, which has a diameter of 9 kilometers, was only discovered in 2022, but at that time its origin was unknown. Now, however, experts have come to the conclusion that it was the result of a space emergency.
The exact date of the fall of this meteor in Africa has not yet been determined, but researchers have come to the conclusion that it happened during the time of the extinction of the dinosaurs. This meteor was about 450-500 meters wide, passed over the Earth's surface at a speed of 72,000 km/h, and formed a fireball in the sky.
The impact caused a tsunami about 800 meters high, the waves crossed the Atlantic Ocean and left geological traces, which amplified the effects of the fall of the larger meteor, destroying most of the life on Earth.
To study the Nadir crater, the team used 3D data from the TGS company. The experts are studying also the rock layers, which will help to better understand this event.
