European Union (EU) countries have agreed to lift all economic sanctions on Syria at a meeting in Brussels.

Sanctions against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, however, will remain in place.

"It is clear that we want there to be jobs and livelihoods for the people [in Syria], so that it would be a more stable country," said EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

In February, the EU had already lifted some sanctions on Syria to support the country after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the BBC reports.

Restrictions on oil, natural gas, and electricity supplies were lifted, as were sanctions on the transport sector, including aviation.

Also, the EU has restored access to financing and certain economic resources to five banks, and eased restrictions on the export of luxury items for personal use to Syria.
