Today, Nov. 19, an EU president and foreign minister will be elected by 27 leaders of the organization in Brussels. The process will be held behind the closed doors.

It is expected that Germany and Frane will come up with a singe candidate. Nevertheless, the UK will have the final say.

Although British PM Gordon Brown pushes Tony Blair for the job other European countries persist opposing the candidate grounding their decision first of all on Blair’s support of the war in Iraq. Among other British candidates are the Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Commissioner Catherine Ashton.

Benelux Premiers are also participating in the race, here belong — Herman Van Rompuy (Belgium), Jen Peter Balkenende (the Netherlands), and Jean-Claude Juncker (Luxembourg).

According to the Irish Examiner e-source, the former Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, is actively campaigning for the seat.

“While the president’s role will be that of a chair of leaders’ quarterly meetings, arranging the agenda and gaining consensus, the foreign minister’s job will be more active. The person will be a member of both the council and the commission and take control of the EU’s world-wide embassies,” the source reads Nov. 19.
